Pakistan’s 128-run victory over Bangladesh on Friday was overshadowed by a 'spirit of cricket' debate after Salman Ali Agha was run out in contentious fashion. In an incident echoing the 2023 Ashes stumping of Jonny Bairstow, Agha was dismissed for 64 by Bangladesh captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz while attempting to return the ball to the bowler.
The dismissal, which occurred during the 39th over in Mirpur, left Agha visibly fuming as he threw his helmet and gloves to the ground upon leaving the field. Despite the win, which levels the three-match series at 1-1, the post-match discourse has focused entirely on the line between tactical opportunism and sportsmanship.
The controversy unfolded after Mohammad Rizwan drove a ball toward the non-striker’s end. The ball struck Agha’s pad and bat, and the batter, assuming the ball was effectively "dead," bent down to pick it up and return it to Miraz.
However, the Bangladesh skipper circled behind Agha, snatched the ball before the batter could pass it, and immediately broke the stumps while Agha was still out of his crease. The third umpire upheld the appeal, ruling that the ball was still in play.
Following the match, Agha appeared at the press conference to clear the air, acknowledging that while the dismissal was legal, it lacked the "sportsman spirit" he expected from a contemporary.
I think sportsman spirit has to be there. What he (Mehidy) has done is in the law. I think if he thinks it’s right, it’s right, but if you ask me my perspective, I would have done differently. I would have gone for sportsman spirit. We haven’t done this previously, and we would never do that in the future as well. Actually, the ball hit on my pad and then my bat. So I thought he can’t get me run-out now... I was just trying to give him the ball back. I was not looking for the run or anything like that, but he already decided (to make the run-out).

Agha also expressed regret over his explosive reaction at the boundary line:
It was just heat-of-the-moment kind of stuff. I’m sure I wasn’t saying nice things (to Litton Das), and I’m sure he wasn’t saying nice stuff as well. But it was just heat of the moment, so we are fine.

The Mirpur incident has added a layer of needle to Sunday’s series decider. While Bangladesh successfully slowed Pakistan's momentum with the wicket, they were ultimately unable to chase down the DLS-adjusted target.
Precedent: This is the first major 'Spirit of Cricket' controversy in the subcontinent since the 2024 ICC rule refinements regarding 'dead balls.'
Series status: The three-match ODI series is currently tied at 1-1, with all to play for on Sunday.
Bairstow echo: Many analysts are comparing this to the Alex Carey stumping incident, where a player was dismissed while assuming a break in play.
Reconciliation: Agha admitted he hasn't patched things up with Mehidy yet, stating, "I haven't yet, but don't worry, I'll find him."
