Apple is reportedly planning a major overhaul of Siri, turning it into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Sources say the updated Siri, expected to be part of iOS 27, could be a key highlight at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference(WWDC) event in June.
Apple may be feeling the heat as OpenAI reportedly plans to enter the hardware space, led by former Apple design chief Jony Ive. The move could put additional pressure on Apple to accelerate its AI strategy, especially as rivals push into more integrated, device-driven AI experiences. The Siri chatbot, known internally as "Campos," will be compatible with both voice and text inputs.
Apple senior vice president Craig Federighi had previously stated that he didn’t want Siri to be a chatbot, and rather, that he wanted Apple’s AI options to be “integrated so it’s there within reach whenever you need it.” But it appears that the game plan has changed amid increased pressure from the success of other companies’ AI chatbots.
Apple has struggled to keep pace in the AI race, repeatedly postponing its “more personalized Siri” rollout. Last year, the company evaluated AI technologies from competitors such as OpenAI and Anthropic before ultimately partnering with Google’s Gemini, a collaboration confirmed by both companies earlier this month.
