On Tuesday, Google unveiled its new AI-first laptop series called GoogleBooks, designed around Gemini Intelligence to offer smarter assistance, deeper Android integration, and a more personalised computing experience.
Google says GoogleBooks are the “first laptops designed from the ground up for Gemini Intelligence,” this is what the company describes as a shift “from an operating system to an intelligence system.”
The new GoogleBooks will support Android apps, AI-generated widgets, and Gemini-powered contextual assistance. Unlike traditional Chromebooks, the devices are also expected to run a new intelligence-focused operating system, with the first models scheduled to launch this fall.
Almost 15 years after Chromebooks and ChromeOS sparked a wave of affordable, web-based laptops that reshaped the education market, Google has now introduced GoogleBooks, a new AI-first laptop platform built around Android and Gemini Intelligence, aiming to bring a similar transformation to the premium computing space.
In a blog post, Google Senior Director Alex Kuscher said, “Over 15 years ago, we introduced the Chromebook, a laptop built for a cloud-first world. Now, as computing shifts from an operating system to an intelligence system, we see an opportunity to rethink laptops again.”
Google describes GoogleBooks as featuring a “featherweight design” with “heavyweight power,” suggesting mid- to upper-tier ultraportable pricing. The devices are expected to be more expensive than Chromebooks, which currently range between $750 and $1,000 for high-end models.
Google has introduced a range of AI-powered features for its new GoogleBooks lineup, designed to deliver deeper integration with Gemini and Android devices. The laptops aim to offer smarter interactions, seamless cross-device connectivity, and premium hardware built with leading manufacturers.
Key features:
Magic Pointer: Uses Gemini to interpret on-screen content; hovering or selecting items can trigger actions like scheduling meetings or visualising objects together
Create Your Widget: Allows users to generate custom widgets using simple AI prompts
Android integration: Run Android apps, cast mobile apps to the laptop, and access phone files through Quick Access
Seamless ecosystem: Deeper connectivity between GoogleBooks and Android smartphones without extra downloads
Premium design: Built with partners like Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo, featuring varied designs and a distinctive “glow bar” for identification
Launch timeline: GoogleBooks are expected to launch this fall
