Instagram is rolling out a new Story-resharing tool that lets users repost any Story from a public account directly to their own, even when they’re not tagged. The company announced the update in a Threads post, adding that creators who prefer not to participate can disable the option in their privacy settings.
The feature seems designed for instances where individuals might forget to tag others in a photo, simplifying the sharing process that previously required the original poster to tag people before they could reshare it on their Stories. Additionally, if you found a humorous or touching Story from a public account, the only method to reshare it until now was by capturing screenshots. This update allows users to reshare the Story directly.
Once the update reaches your device, rolling out globally on both iOS and Android, you’ll find a simple share option built into the Story interface. Just note that public accounts can opt out by adjusting their privacy settings.
Open the Instagram app on your device.
Tap on any Story posted by a public account.
Look for the share icon next to the message box, then tap it and choose “Add to your story.”
The selected Story will appear in your own Story tray with automatic attribution to the original creator, similar to how Instagram handles Reels shares.
If you don’t see the feature yet, it’s still rolling out and should reach your account soon.
Public accounts that prefer not to allow resharing can disable it through their privacy settings.
If you prefer to keep your Stories from being reshared, Instagram lets you turn off the option with just a few taps. Head to Privacy and select Story, then switch off the “Allow sharing to story” toggle. Once disabled, your followers will no longer be able to add your Stories to their own.
This new story resharing feature is similar to the repost Reels feature introduced by the social media giant earlier this year, enabling users to share public Reels and feed posts directly to their own feeds with automatic credit given to the original creator.
