Instagram has introduced a new feature that will enhance user control over their feed content, starting with Reels. Announced on December 10, the feature called 'Your Algorithm' offers a clearer understanding of how Instagram selects the content displayed to users, allowing them to directly influence these decisions. This release marks one of the platform's most transparent initiatives to assist users in understanding and personalizing the recommendations they receive.

How 'Your Algorithm' Feature Works

When users watch Reels, a small icon with two lines and hearts will now appear in the top right corner. By clicking this icon, users will be directed to the 'Your Algorithm' dashboard, where Instagram displays the themes it believes are most pertinent to them. These topics are automatically generated based on the user's activity within the app and organized using AI, offering a personalized summary of their current interests.

Users have the option to share this summary as a Story, creating a social moment akin to how individuals share their Spotify Wrapped results annually. Below the summary, a comprehensive list of topics is displayed, showcasing everything Instagram believes you have been interacting with lately.

At this point, the experience turns interactive. You have the option to tap on particular topics to express your preference for seeing more or less of them. Gradually, the suggestions in your Reels feed will adapt according to these selections. Additionally, if there's something important to you that's missing, you can manually enter it to ensure your interest profile truly represents you, rather than an algorithm's estimation.

The update reflects Instagram’s push to give users more control over personalized content. Unlike TikTok’s broad categories, Your Algorithm lets users tailor their own interests. Currently live in the U.S., it will expand globally and eventually include Explore and other parts of the app for full personalization.
