Viral posts circulating on social media claim that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said human water consumption is slowing the development of artificial intelligence because water should instead be used to cool AI data centres. The quote has been widely attributed to Bezos' recent appearance at the VivaTech conference in Paris. However, a review of Bezos' remarks at the event and publicly available recordings shows he made no such statement.
The posts attribute the following quote to Bezos:
"If we starve our data infrastructure of cooling resources just to sustain baseline human comfort, we're actively delaying the birth of a superintelligence."
Some versions also claim he said:
"Sometimes you have to prioritise intelligence that will save us over biology that slows us."
The statements were widely shared online and linked to Bezos' appearance at the annual VivaTech conference in Paris.
Bezos did speak at VivaTech, but his session focused on topics including Blue Origin, lunar exploration, artificial intelligence, and innovation.
During a conversation moderated by former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino, Bezos argued that AI would not eliminate jobs but instead create more opportunities by helping people identify new problems worth solving. He said the biggest constraint on future growth would be human imagination. Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp also participated in the discussion.
At no point did Bezos mention human water consumption, data centre cooling, or prioritising AI over human needs.
The quote appears to have originated in a Reddit thread that has since been deleted before spreading to Hacker News, X (formerly Twitter), and other social media platforms. Much of its circulation relied on a fabricated screenshot designed to resemble a legitimate news report.
A review of the Associated Press livestream of the VivaTech event found no instance of Bezos making the claimed remarks. Cross-checks with multiple AI verification tools likewise identified the quote as fabricated.
Jeff Bezos did not say that human water use is slowing AI development or that water should be prioritised for AI infrastructure over people. The viral quote is fabricated and was never made during his VivaTech appearance or in any verified public statement.
As misinformation involving prominent technology leaders continues to spread online, readers are advised to verify viral quotes through official event recordings or credible news sources before sharing them.
