Mark Zuckerberg, the head of the social media giant, called the technology a "huge scientific breakthrough" before an audience of hundreds gathered on the company's Silicon Valley campus.
During the 'Meta Connect' annual developers conference, Mark Zuckerberg, the head of the social media giant, unveiled a variety of devices in collaboration with sunglasses brands Ray-Ban and Oakley. This event occurs amid continuous examination of the effects of its products, especially concerning children, as the company owns Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Building on the success of its previous Ray-Ban smart eyewear, Meta has introduced the Ray-Ban Display, a bold new step in merging fashion with function. This latest model features include:
A full-color, high-resolution display embedded in one lens, enabling users to conduct video calls, view messages, and interact with apps like Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook, all without picking up their phone.
Equipped with a 12MP camera, built-in speakers, and multi-directional microphones, the glasses can record videos, handle calls, and even play audio seamlessly.
They offer real-time navigation and live translations, making them a powerful travel companion. Meta’s on-board AI assistant supports quick tasks and contextual queries, while cloud connectivity ensures users have direct access to the internet and their social platforms right through the lens.
The company has unveiled a neural wristband, a sleek wristband that works like a controller. designed to work with its Meta Ray-Ban Display glasses, enabling users to perform actions such as sending messages through subtle hand movements. This new Meta Neural Band wristband is the controlling device, and these glasses represent Meta's most significant effort in the wearable AI-driven hardware sector, as it seeks to rival Google and Apple in the international smart glasses competition.
The device employs electromyography (EMG) technology to capture signals from the brain to the hand, enabling users to control apps through slight hand movements. It is water-resistant, boasts an 18-hour battery life, and resembles a screenless Fitbit.
Although Meta's latest glasses are not as sophisticated as the Orion AR glasses it hinted at last year, they mark the company's initial significant commercial venture into smart eyewear. Industry analysts suggest that Meta is competing with Google and Apple, who are also developing their own smart glasses with more extensive ecosystem integration.
