OpenAI has rolled out a new Codex app for macOS, offering developers a standalone environment to work with AI-driven coding agents. The app replaces the need to juggle terminals and browser tabs by consolidating Codex tools into a single interface. According to OpenAI, the goal is to simplify complex workflows, particularly when developers are coordinating multiple AI agents simultaneously. The release builds on Codex’s expanding adoption since its launch earlier this year.

According to OpenAI, the Codex app is meant to function as a command centre for AI-assisted development. Instead of bouncing between terminals, IDEs and browser tabs, developers get a single dashboard showing what each agent is working on and how far along it is. Projects are broken into clear threads, making it easier to spot stalled tasks, review progress, or jump in when something looks off.
OpenAI says it has addressed a key challenge of agent-based coding, conflicts between multiple bots by giving each agent an isolated worktree. This keeps experiments and fixes separate from the main codebase, allowing developers to review, compare, and merge changes at their own pace using their preferred editor.
Who Can Use Codex
The Codex app for macOS is now available to users on ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education plans, all accessible with the same ChatGPT login. OpenAI says Codex can be used across the web, CLI, IDE extensions and the new macOS app. For a limited time, even Free and Go users can try it. The AI giant has also temporarily increased rate limits for paid users, likely to encourage early adoption.

The Codex macOS application is crafted to integrate effortlessly into workflows that OpenAI asserts are frequently used by developers. It can convert Figma designs into UI code ready for production, aid in bug tracking and release management with tools such as Linear, and facilitate app deployment to major cloud services. Additionally, it offers features for creating images for mockups, accessing OpenAI API documentation, and handling common file formats like PDFs and spreadsheets.sheets, and Word documents.
