Luxury fashion label Prada has launched a chai scented perfume that has quickly caught attention for both its concept and its price. The fragrance, part of the brand’s Les Infusions collection, blends chai inspired notes with sandalwood, cardamom, citrus and soft musks, positioning an everyday Indian experience in a high end global format.
The perfume was unveiled on Prada’s official beauty platform earlier this week. Described as warm, milky and woody, the scent aims to recreate the comfort associated with a cup of chai while maintaining a refined and minimalist fragrance profile. The bottle design reflects earthy tones, aligning with the idea of spice and warmth.
What has stirred conversation is the cost. A 100 ml bottle is priced at around 190 dollars, roughly translating to Rs 17,000 in India. The pricing has led to mixed reactions online, with some fragrance enthusiasts expressing excitement at seeing chai represented on a luxury stage, while others questioned whether a familiar daily aroma belongs in an expensive perfume.
Social media platforms were quick to react. Several users welcomed the idea, calling it nostalgic and cosy, while others joked that smelling like chai might be a step too far. The launch follows Prada’s recent brush with Indian cultural references, including last year’s Kolhapuri inspired footwear that had also triggered debate around cultural borrowing and branding.
Industry observers say the chai scented perfume reflects a growing trend among global luxury brands to tap into Indian sensory experiences. While the fragrance may not appeal to everyone, it has already succeeded in generating conversation, curiosity and visibility for the brand.
Prada has not yet announced whether the perfume will see a wider retail rollout in India. For now, Infusion de Santal Chai remains available through select global luxury channels, leaving buyers to decide whether the comfort of chai is something they want to wear or simply drink.
