The hair wizard

SALONI DHUMNE

If you have a good hair day, nothing like it. Wear your pair of ripped jeans, a simple tee and sneakers, make a high pony and you will simply make heads turn. But you need to know what hairstyle suits you. Some end up spending years trying to find the perfect look, whereas, the rest love to experiment with different haircuts and styles, thus ruling out the possibility of monotony. Most of us, however, put a good amount of faith in our hairstylist. Finding the right one can be a task, but once you discover, you may never want to leave him/ her.

Ryan D’Rozario, who is a wizard in block colouring, hair styling, straightening and extensions, was recently in town to conduct a masterclass on hair colour and hair care. Ryan, who literally creates magic with a comb and a pair of scissors, has styled celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Kajol, Malaika Arora, Tara Sutaria and several others. The hair expert, who owns a salon called MUAH (makeup and hair) in Pali Hills, Mumbai, gave us some exciting insights about current trends, hairstyling products and a lot more. Excerpts:

What are some of the current haircut trends?
The shag haircut, which originated during the ’70s and ’80s, is currently trending. As of now, we are experimenting with versions of the shag as this haircut works well with all kinds of hair textures including the finer hair type. Such varying versions of this particular haircut works to add more volume and a lot of movement to the hair, which is exactly what women these days are looking for.

Can you suggest any do-it-at-home hairstyles?
A casual hairstyle perfectly complements a party or a formal outfit. The best you can go for are braids. Braids go perfectly well with almost anything. They are easy to make and they come with multiple variations too. Khaleesi from GoT and Phoebe from FRIENDS are one of the most brilliant examples for displaying a number of easy hairstyles when it comes to basic braids. For more ideas and tips, you can always YouTube DIY braids and pick anything from the never-ending list.

For layered hair, loose waves are one of the most simple yet sophisticated looks that you can achieve. Apply a little amount of moose after towel drying. Twist the hair till the hair tips and tie it into a round bun at the occipital of the head using a cloth scrunchie and leave it to dry. It will give a loose flow. Tonging is also an option but it requires heat, hence not much of an option. But, it looks brilliant on coloured hair.

Is it okay to use hairstyling products?
I personally focus on maintenance-free haircuts and hairstyles, which happen to be my forte. This also applies to men. When it comes to hair styling products, hair spray and moose are the oldest fashion products in the book and can never go wrong. They cause absolutely no harm to the scalp and do their job brilliantly.

What is your opinion on Indian women sporting short hair?
If one prefers short hair, it is a welcome change as most Indian women tend to stick to long hair due to popular opinion and culture. We are still battling to get them to cut their hair short as it looks quite trendy and stylish and is even easy to maintain. Medium length hair is trending a lot currently. It exists with multiple variations, thus making it one of the most amazing looks and manages to blend with any outfit you wear.

Internationally, people have much finer hair due to which they prefer short hair.

A lot of people want to sport hairstyles that Hollywood/ Bollywood celebs flaunt. Do you think this makes them lose their individuality?
Hollywood celebs are great to follow as they themselves follow trends. Nowadays, these hairstyles and haircuts are styled according to a particular character that they are supposed to be portraying. But what people fail to realise is that the stylists use a lot of moose, hair spray and other such products to achieve that particular look which is not possible to achieve on a daily basis and may not suit every face structure as well. Hence, they come along with a lot of repercussions and homework. There are times when the look is quite achievable, but only when the look is not character-specific, and that is something one needs to find out before actually going for it.
