During the 47th Session of the World Heritage Committee, it was determined that India's famous Maratha Military Landscapes have gained international recognition as the 44th UNESCO World Heritage Site. India's official nomination for the 2024-25 cycle, titled 'Maratha Military Landscapes of India,' was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it the 44th site in India to receive this prestigious global acknowledgment.
UNESCO has incorporated 26 new sites into its World Heritage List. The meeting, conducted in Paris, encompassed 26 locations, comprising one mixed-use site, four outstanding natural landscapes, and 21 culturally important places. These 26 sites, which include fortresses, palaces, and coastal wonders, underscore the diversity and richness of our shared heritage.
Maratha Military Landscape
The Maratha Military Landscapes consist of 12 forts, including Salher Fort (Maharashtra), Shivneri Fort (Maharashtra), Lohagad Fort (Maharashtra), Khanderi Fort (Maharashtra), Raigad Fort (Maharashtra), Rajgad Fort (Maharashtra), Pratapgad Fort (Maharashtra), Suvarnadurg Fort (Maharashtra), Panhala Fort (Maharashtra), Vijaydurg Fort (Maharashtra), Sindhudurg Fort (Maharashtra), and Gingee Fort (Tamil Nadu, also known as Jinji Fort Raigad, Shivneri, and Gingee, among others.
Constructed from the 17th to the 19th centuries in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, these edifices showcase the Marathas' remarkable expertise in defensive architecture and tell an important story in Indian history.
