Pardon his French

Anjali Jhangiani

DJ Snake dropped his sophomore album titled Carte Blanche, which translates to “the freedom to do whatever one chooses”. The artist seems to have fully embodied that spirit by breaking all musical and creative boundaries. A native of Paris, he names his country’s cultural melting pot — as well as his worldwide travels in recent years — as a key inspiration in bringing the genre-defying sound of Carte Blanche to life.

In addition to the double-platinum single Taki Taki, the album, which sounds like summer, also comprises hits like Enzo in collaboration with Sheck Wes, featuring Offset, 21 Savage and Gucci Mane, the India-inspired club smash Magenta Riddim, the bilingual summer anthem Loco Contigo with J. Balvin and Tyga. The new tracks include features with Burna Boy, the rising African born star most recently included in the Lion King album and winner of the Breakthrough Act at the BET Awards, Bryson Tiller, OVO stars Majid Jordan, Brazlian Star Anitta, Sean Paul and legends from the electronic genre Zhu, Zomboy and Eptic. Fans are going gaga over No Option, a track featuring Burna Boy, and tweeting “This song is better than any one on the African Giant album. DJ Snake doing a madness.”

Netizens are talking about how they were “on fire after listening to the album” because it is “too hot to handle”. Everyone seems to agree that the artist put his heart and soul into this compilation of songs. But no matter what you do, you can’t make everyone happy. Fans of Zayn Malik were left disappointed as they posted, “Zayn really isn’t on DJ Snake’s album, even after he used Zayn’s name and ‘confirmed’ the collab would be on there. All men do is lie.”
