Simple yet relevant : Pipsi Review

Hemant Juvekar

It’s difficult to portray the emotions/world of children. If you go overboard or underplay the emotions, the entire movie can go haywire. Pipsi talks about the struggles of two young kids’ to save their pet fish, but more importantly it is about the ever present emotion among us called ‘hope’.

Chani (Maithili Patwardhan), a smart girl who always stands first in school, lives in a drought prone village along with her parents and brother. A dreamer, she travels to various destinations sitting in a stalled railway wagon near the village with her friend Balu (Sahil Joshi).

Coming home after one such ‘journey’, Chani overhears the conversation between the doctor and her ailing mother. Her mother has only three more months to live. Scared, Chani starts looking for means to save her mother. She comes to know that the soul of a person resides in a fish. She starts looking for a fish to save her mother and eventually finds one. She names him Pipsi. And then begins her quest to keep that fish alive in a drought ridden area.

Along with the desperate attempts of Chani and Balu to keep Pipsi alive, the movie also portrays the life and hardships an ordinary farmer suffers in a drought zone. Written by Saurabh Bhave and directed by Rohan Deshpande, the movie captures the theme well but tends to deviate from its original plot. Selling farmlands for a bungalow, not getting enough compensation for the hard work shifts the attention from Pipsi. The movie would have stood out if it would have focused on the struggles of the two kids.

The music is good and the song Tanpihi has some wonderful lyrics. The two child actors are exceptional and their innocence makes the movie worthwhile.
