The Indian television series CID is not just any other show, it is a legacy, an emotion people are attached to. Of course, we’ve marvelled at the way Sherlock Holmes and our own homegrown detective Byomkesh Bakshi solved cases using their wit, presence of mind, intelligence and gut feeling and at times, even risking their lives. However, CID, which first aired in 1997, continues to remain one of the most favourite crime-fiction and detective shows for Indians.
One of the longest running and most loved series, CID not only became an integral part of every millennials’ growing up years, but characters in the show like ACP Pradyuman (Shivaji Satam), Senior Inspector Abhijeet (Aditya Shrivastav), Senior Inspector Daya (Dayanand Shetty), Inspector Freddy (Dinesh Phadnis), Dr Tarika (Shraddha Musale), Dr Salunkhe (Narendra Gupta) and others as well made a connection with the audience and left an indelible impression on the mind.
We’ve also laughed at dialogues like ‘Daya, Darwaza Tod Do’, ‘Kuch Toh Gadbad Hai’, and ‘Pata Lagao’ innumerable times and cried every time a character on the show died. In fact, CID jokes have entertained us for long. Now, fans are shell-shocked with the announcement that the show on Sony TV is going off air. The last episode will air tonight.
The channel released a statement which said that the show, which has clocked more than 1,540 episodes since its launch, is taking ‘an intermittent break’ and ‘will gear up for a renewed season with a lot more contextual cases keeping alive the thrill that the audience has experienced so far.’ It is not just a setback for the audience but also for the cast who has been living these characters for more than two decades.
As soon as the news of the show going off air was announced, CID fans went berserk and expressed their remorse on social media. The hashtag #SaveCID started to trend on Twitter requesting the channel and its producer to continue the show. For some, it is an end of an era and entertainment, for others it is like snatching away a part of their childhood. Social media is flooded with jokes, and memes on CID, with every post urging the makers to keep the show alive.
