Superman to now fight for 'Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow'

Staff Writer

On a busy Saturday with announcements at the virtual DC FanDome event, DC's Chief Creative Officer and editor Jim Lee announced that Superman would have a better, more neutral motto.

So, from "Truth, Justice, and the American Way", the more politically correct superhero will fight for "Truth, Justice, and A Better Tomorrow". Sharing this on the DC FanDome, Lee said the changes were made to "better reflect the storylines we're telling across DC and to honor Superman's incredible legacy of over 80 years building a better world."

Speaking of "an ever-evolving motto", Lee added: "Superman has long been a symbol of hope that inspires people, and that optimism is what fueled him in this new mission."

According to Variety.com, "Truth, Justice and the American Way" does not originate from Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's early Superman comics. The motto stems from the radio series "Superman" in the early 1940s, "as a way of encouraging American military efforts in World War II".

The motto "American Way" was taken for the TV series "Adventures of Superman" which was broadcast in the 1950s during the early days of the Cold War and the paranoia created by the anti-Communist witch-hunt of the demagogic US Senator Joseph McCarthy.
