Pune: The 38th edition of the Pune International Marathon is set to kick off on Sunday, December 1, promising an electrifying experience for both participants and spectators.

This renowned annual event, which has been held almost every year since 1983, has solidified its reputation as India's oldest "flagship" marathon, attracting elite international and Indian athletes to Pune.

The event will commence at 3 a.m. from Sanas Maidan with the 42.195 km full marathon, followed by a half marathon at 6:30 a.m. and additional races, including a 10 km race and a 3 km wheelchair race.

Thousands of Pune’s sports enthusiasts are expected to gather to cheer on the runners along the scenic course, which highlights iconic Pune landmarks from Sarasbaug to Sinhagad Road.

A robust coordination team will ensure a safe and smooth experience for participants, with comprehensive medical facilities and hydration points stationed at every kilometer along the route.

Dr. Rajendra Jagtap will lead a team of 150 doctors, 250 nurses, and physiotherapy professionals, supported by a temporary 15-bed hospital at Sanas Maidan.

Nearly 8,000 runners from India and overseas, including elite athletes from Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Nepal, will compete this year, said Adv. Abhay Chhajed, Trustees and Chairman, Coordinating Committee, 38 Pune InterNational Marathon Competition 2024.

The competition promises thrilling performances from top Indian athletes such as Jyoti Gawte and Manisha Joshi, as well as military and police runners. Winners will receive bamboo trophies, crafted by the Bamboo Society of India, symbolizing sustainability.

The Pune International Marathon, recognized by the Athletics Federation of India, provides a platform for athletes to set personal records and qualify for other major global marathons. With a flat, fast track, it offers ideal conditions for runners aiming for their personal bests.

The event showcases Pune’s sporting spirit, cultural heritage, and commitment to environmental responsibility, as athletes and spectators unite for a day of competition, celebration, and community.
