Pune: A snake rescuer lost his life after being bitten by a cobra while attempting to release it in the wild. The tragic incident has left the local community in shock. The deceased has been identified as Rahul alias Vikas Mallikarjun Swami (32), a resident of Alandi.
According to reports, Swami was a well-known snake rescuer in the area. On the day of the incident, a cobra was spotted in Kale Colony near Alandi-Dehu Phata, causing panic among residents. Swami promptly arrived at the location, captured the snake, and proceeded to release it in a remote area.
While releasing the captured cobra, the snake bit Swami on the hand, injecting venom. He was rushed to Alandi Rural Hospital, where doctors administered first aid. Due to the severity of the bite, he was referred to YCM Hospital in Pimpri-Chinchwad for advanced treatment.
However, by the time he reached the hospital, the venom had spread throughout his body, leading to complications. Despite intensive medical efforts, Swami could not be saved.
Medical sources suggest that the delay in reaching the hospital contributed to the fatal outcome. Additionally, it was noted that no immediate first aid measures such as tying a bandage around the bite area were taken, which could have helped slow the venom’s spread.
Swami’s tragic death has deeply affected the local community, as he was known for his selfless efforts in rescuing snakes and ensuring their safe relocation. He was the sole breadwinner of his family, leaving behind his mother and sister.
