Pune: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) apprehended an Assistant Public Prosecutor, Anjala Nalini Kamalakar Nawagire, (54), while she was accepting a bribe of ₹10000.

The bribe was allegedly demanded in exchange for facilitating the return of a car seized in connection with a criminal case.

The incident traces back to June 2024, when a complaint was filed against the complainant's husband at the Hadapsar Police Station, leading to the seizure of a Maruti Swift car registered in the complainant's name.

To reclaim the vehicle, the complainant filed a petition in the Cantonment Court. Following the court's order, Nawagire was responsible for submitting a statement regarding the petition.

During a meeting with the complainant at her office, Nawagire allegedly demanded a bribe to expedite the process and ensure the return of the car.

The complainant subsequently reported the matter to the ACB, which conducted an initial verification on July 26, confirming the demand of ₹10000 after negotiations.

On August 14, a trap was set at Nawagire's office in the Cantonment Court. As she accepted the bribe, the ACB team caught her on the spot.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of Superintendent of Police Amol Tambe and Additional Superintendent of Police Dr. Sheetal Janve, with Police Inspector Rupesh Jadhav leading the investigation. Navgire now faces charges under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Recently, Assistant Police Inspector Chetan Chandrakant Thorbole had been charged and arrested for demanding a bribe of ₹5 lakh rupees to provide a nil report on a complaint about obtaining a job with fake documents.
