Balbharati-Paud Phata Road Project: PMC to Reassess Budget as Costs Likely to Increase

The PMC had prepared the cost estimate over 1.5 years ago, and due to delays, the budget will now be reassessed based on current market rates.

Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has begun preparations for the long-debated Balbharati-Paud Phata road after receiving approval from the Bombay High Court. The project, which was initially estimated to cost ₹252 crore, may now see a significant rise in expenses due to market fluctuations.

The 1.8-kilometer-long road, which will pass behind ILS Law College via Vetal Tekdi, was included in the 2017 Development Plan as an alternative route. Environmentalists had strongly opposed the project, citing concerns over biodiversity loss and ecological damage.

Following a petition filed by Nagrik Chetana Manch, the High Court had appointed a committee led by Sunil Limaye to assess the concerns raised by both the PMC and environmental groups. After reviewing the case, the court ruled in favor of PMC, allowing the project to proceed. However, the court has directed PMC to verify whether environmental and forest department approvals are required before construction begins.

Revised Cost Estimates and Project Details

  • Total Road Length: 1,800 meters

  • Elevated Section: 400 meters

  • Road Width: 30 meters

  • Initial Estimated Cost: ₹252.13 crore

Likely Cost Increase Due to Market Conditions

The PMC had prepared the cost estimate over 1.5 years ago, and due to delays, the budget will now be reassessed based on current market rates.

Legal and Environmental Developments

PMC has filed a caveat in the Supreme Court to safeguard its stance in case of a legal challenge against the High Court’s decision.

Environmental activists are considering filing an appeal in the Supreme Court to oppose the project.
