Mohannagar, once a quiet residential pocket in Balewadi, has transformed into a bustling urban hub due to rapid real estate development, burgeoning population, and the influx of commercial establishments. However, this growth has not been matched by corresponding upgrades in traffic management and urban infrastructure.
Residents report that during peak hours, traffic comes to a virtual standstill, with vehicles crawling bumper-to-bumper for long stretches. School buses, office-goers, and emergency vehicles are all caught in the daily snarl, leading to lost productivity, increased pollution, and mounting frustration.
Many internal roads in Mohannagar are narrow and have become further constricted due to illegal parking, roadside vendors, and unauthorized encroachments. This leaves little room for smooth two-way traffic movement. Key intersections lack proper traffic signals, signage, and the presence of traffic police, resulting in chaotic movement and frequent bottlenecks, especially during school and office rush hours.
The rapid construction of high-rise apartments and commercial complexes has led to a surge in vehicle numbers without adequate planning for parking or road widening. Limited public transport options force more residents to use private vehicles, further compounding the congestion problem.
The sense of frustration is palpable among Mohannagar’s residents. Many have taken to social media and local forums to highlight the daily ordeal and have organized petitions demanding swift action from the PMC.
“We feel neglected by the authorities. Despite repeated complaints, there has been no concrete action. The situation is worsening every month,” said a local resident.
Parents are especially concerned about the safety of school children navigating the congested roads, while business owners worry about the impact on customers and deliveries.
While the PMC has acknowledged the complaints, concrete action on the ground has been slow. Officials have promised a comprehensive traffic survey and assured residents that a plan is being formulated to address the congestion.
