Pune: In a dramatic demonstration amidst heavy rain, residents of Baner, Balewadi, Sus, Mhalunge, and Pashan, led by former corporator Amol Balwadkar, gathered at Radha Chowk in Baner to protest against the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) administration.

The protest aimed to highlight issues such as severe traffic congestion, pothole-ridden roads, and the lack of traffic wardens. Despite the downpour, more than a hundred citizens joined the protest.

Baner residents have been struggling with these issues for the past one and a half to two years. Prolonged traffic jams and poor road conditions have taken a toll on their physical and mental health.

Despite numerous complaints, the municipal administration has not addressed these problems. Former Corporator Amol Balwadkar led the protest with a bullock cart and drums, making their voices heard in the rain.

Representatives from various local societies, women, and citizens were present at the protest. They detailed the problems they face daily. The administration's failure to send an official to accept their memorandum led to the protesters burning the document in defiance. The protest was called off after police mediated.

The key demands of the protesters are:

  • Repair potholes and improve road conditions.

  • Appoint traffic wardens.

  • Implement and maintain traffic signal systems.

  • Install necessary barricades.

  • Construct a new underpass near the Mumbai-Bangalore highway and improve the service road.

  • Expedite the completion of the Balewadi-Wakad road.

  • Improve the Mahalunge-Nande road.
