Pune: A municipal garbage collection truck in Baramati ran over a man and his daughter, dragging them along the road while they were on their way to school. The incident triggered public outrage, with citizens blocking the Bhigwan road in protest. Parents and local residents demanded strict action, particularly after it was revealed that the truck was operating without a number plate.
The accident occurred on Friday (February 7) morning around 9 AM when Yogesh Nale was riding his two-wheeler, taking his daughter to Balvikas Mandir School. Near Teen Hatti Chowk, a garbage truck belonging to the municipality hit them and dragged them along the road. Fortunately, Nale's vehicle did not get trapped under the truck, preventing a major disaster.
After recovering from the shock, Yogesh Nale chased the truck and managed to bring it to a halt. Upon confronting the driver, he discovered that the man was heavily intoxicated. Nale immediately called for the municipal chief to visit the spot. He also alleged that a person accompanying the driver attempted to record a video of him instead of addressing the incident.
Following the protest, Police Inspector Vilas Nale arrived at the scene. However, furious parents refused to disperse until the municipal chief arrived. They blocked the road for some time, demanding accountability. Finally, Chief Officer Mahesh Rokde arrived, after which the discussion was shifted to the Baramati Police Station.
This was the second such incident in the past month where an intoxicated garbage truck driver had endangered citizens’ lives. Residents are now demanding strict legal action against the contractor operating these vehicles. Additionally, when it was discovered that the truck involved in this incident was running without a number plate, parents called for immediate intervention from RTO officials to take strict action.
