Pune: Adding to its reputation as a leading educational hub, Baramati will soon be home to a veterinary college, following the Maharashtra state cabinet’s approval on Tuesday, February 25. This decision follows Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar’s continuous efforts over the past month to secure the project for the region.
The cabinet has approved two veterinary colleges—one in Baramati and another in Parli, with ₹564.58 crore allocated for each institution. This marks a significant expansion in Maharashtra’s veterinary education infrastructure, benefitting both students and rural communities.
During the Krushik 2024 event, Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde expressed her support for Ajit Pawar’s vision of establishing a veterinary college in Baramati. She had assured that a formal proposal would receive cabinet approval, leading to the recent sanction of the project.
Following this commitment, Ajit Pawar’s office actively pursued the proposal, resulting in its successful approval. This new initiative will enhance veterinary education opportunities in Baramati and serve as a vital resource for the state’s livestock and farming communities.
Currently, two to three locations in Baramati are being evaluated for the veterinary college, with Ajit Pawar set to finalize the site selection. A 50-acre plot in Karhawagaj and Malegaon Budruk has been proposed, though it awaits final clearance. The government has allocated ₹30 crore for land acquisition. The infrastructure planning for the college follows the model of the Mouje Savali Vihir Khurd Veterinary College in Shirdi, Ahmednagar district.
The veterinary college will be equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including:
Separate hostels for male and female students
Auditorium and lecture theater complex
Library and digital resource center
Indoor sports complex
Common facilities center
Guest house
Residential quarters for faculty and staff
Farmer accommodation and farm sheds
Playground and fencing for security
Complete furniture and infrastructure support
