Bopdev Ghat Gang Rape Case: Victim and Friend Identify Accused in Identification Parade

Victim and her friend recognized several items, including stolen gold chain, sword used in the attack, a stick, clothing worn by accused, and the motorcycle involved.

Pune, 4th December 2024: In the horrific gang rape case that occurred at Bopdev Ghat, the two accused – Akhtar alias Shoaib Babu Sheikh (27) and Chandrakumar Kanojia (20) – were identified by the victim and the friend who was injured during the attack.

The identification was made during an identification parade held at Yerawada Central Jail, as reported by the police.

The police have filed a 500-page charge sheet against the accused in the Cantonment Court at Wanawadi on Monday, December 2. According to the police, the accused had planned both a robbery and the gang rape.

During the identification parade, the victim and her friend recognized several key items, including the stolen gold chain, the sword used in the attack, a stick, the clothing worn by the accused, and the motorcycle involved.

Forensic analysis has also been conducted, with the semen and blood samples from the accused sent for chemical examination, with DNA test results pending.

The statements of the victim, aged 20, and the injured witness were recorded under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita before the magistrate and were sealed in an envelope along with the charge sheet.

The incident occurred on the night of October 3 when the victim and her friend were walking at Bopdev Ghat, where they were threatened with a sword and subjected to gang rape.

Following their arrest, the accused were transferred to Yerawada Jail, maintaining their police custody.

On December 2, Judicial Magistrate (First Class) A.A. Kulkarni at the Cantonment Court, extended the judicial custody of the accused by fifteen days and issued a production warrant.

The police have been directed to present the accused in court on December 16 for further proceedings.
