Pune: A caregiver entrusted with looking after a bedridden senior citizen has been accused of demanding ₹5 lakh in extortion after threatening to release a video of the elderly man on social media.

The Alankar Police Station has registered a case against the accused, identified as Suraj Rajendra Pawar, aged 32, from Jainapur, Kolhapur.

The incident came to light when the complainant, a lawyer residing in Kothrud, approached the police.

According to the complaint, the lawyer had hired a caregiver to attend to his bedridden father. However, when the original caregiver had to return to Kolhapur temporarily, he assigned the task to Suraj Pawar.

During his tenure as a caregiver, Pawar allegedly took unauthorized photographs and videos of the senior citizen.

He later contacted the complainant, threatening to circulate the images and videos on social media and send them to the complainant’s relatives unless a sum of ₹5 lakh was paid.

Alarmed by the threat, the complainant filed a case at the Alankar Police Station. Police Inspector Chavan is currently leading the investigation, and a case of extortion has been registered against the accused.
