Pune: Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) has increased the price of compressed natural gas (CNG) by ₹1.10 per kg, bringing the new rate to ₹89 per kg. The revised prices, effective from today, will impact Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and other parts of the district. The previous price was ₹87.90 per kg.

The price hike is attributed to fluctuations in the global natural gas market and the rising cost of imported natural gas. MNGL has stated that balancing supply costs based on market rates is a major challenge. The increase also includes production duties and state VAT, which constitute about 15% of the overall hike.

This increase is expected to raise the operational costs for CNG-powered vehicles, including autorickshaws, taxis, and buses. Most autorickshaws in Pune rely on CNG, and drivers have expressed concerns over the growing expenses, calling the hike a serious blow to their livelihoods.

One autorickshaw driver said, “The cost of operating a vehicle has become unsustainable. The government must intervene, as both public and private transport depend heavily on CNG.”

Previously, many vehicle owners had shifted to CNG as a cost-effective alternative to petrol and diesel. However, this price hike adds financial pressure on commuters and vehicle owners alike.

Why the Increase?

According to MNGL’s press release, the price hike is a result of rising costs in imported natural gas and the associated challenges of market-driven supply adjustments. Global price fluctuations, along with excise duties and state VAT, have contributed significantly to the increase.
