Pune: A controversy has erupted over the memorial of "Waghya," the loyal dog of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, at Raigad Fort. OBC leader Laxman Hake has accused Kolhapur’s Sambhajiraje of deliberately stirring tensions by raising this issue.

Hake claims that as the chairman of the Raigad Development Authority, Sambhajiraje should be focusing on fort conservation rather than causing disputes. He has demanded that Sambhajiraje be removed from his position.

Speaking at a press conference, Hake questioned the timing of Sambhajiraje’s demand to remove the memorial, pointing out that he set the deadline for May 31. This date coincides with the birth anniversary of Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar.

Hake stated that efforts are being made to invite the Prime Minister to Ahilyadevi Holkar's birthplace for the celebrations, leading to speculation about why Sambhajiraje chose this specific date for his ultimatum.

Historian Sanjay Sonawani was also present at the conference. Hake alleged that Sambhajiraje is attempting to politically manipulate Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy by restricting it to a particular caste. He further revealed that Sambhajiraje has urged the Chief Minister to remove the Waghya memorial, a demand that has been met with strong opposition.

Hake confirmed that they will be pursuing the matter with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Archaeology Department to prevent the removal of the memorial.
