An official reported that security measures were intensified on Saturday at major religious and heritage locations in Delhi, such as the vicinity of the Red Fort and sections of Chandni Chowk, due to intelligence reports indicating a potential terror threat.
Security agencies have warned of a potential explosion near Red Fort, a significant tourist attraction and high-security area, following reports from Central intelligence agencies that the Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) has allegedly included prominent religious sites in India on its list of targets.
According to sources, there were particular indications that a temple in the Chandni Chowk region might be one of the possible targets.
They mentioned that as intelligence information is being evaluated and confirmed, security measures have been heightened around sensitive religious sites and busy public locations.
According to intelligence agencies, there is a possibility that LeT is planning an attack using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). Sources suggest that this alleged plan is connected to the terror group's efforts to retaliate for the February 6 explosion at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan.
Central agencies and Delhi Police units are working closely together, enhancing surveillance with CCTV monitoring, vehicle inspections, and deploying extra personnel at sensitive areas. Bomb disposal units, canine teams, and rapid response teams are also on standby at key locations, they mentioned.
The warning follows a fatal car explosion close to the historic Red Fort on November 10, 2025, which resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals and injured over 20 others. The explosion happened when a car filled with explosives went off near Gate No 1 of the Red Fort metro station, setting off several nearby vehicles and creating panic in the heavily populated area.
Security agencies have advised the public to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious items or activities to the police or emergency services. Nonetheless, authorities have stated that there is no reason for alarm, as these actions are purely precautionary.
