Pune: In a tragic incident, Vedant Subhash Sonune, a 21-year-old student residing at the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Student Hostel in Pune, succumbed to dengue on August 2.

Vedant, who had recently shared his excitement about performing well in a police recruitment test despite heavy rains, was one of the several students affected by the unsanitary conditions in the hostel.

Vedant, the son of a village employment servant from Shelud village in Jalna District, was in his second year of arts at Modern College, Shivajinagar, while also preparing for the MPSC and police recruitment exams. His sudden death has left his family devastated, especially as they had traveled from their village to be by his side during his final moments.

Following his death, it has been revealed that ten more students at the Bharat Ratna Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Hostel have been diagnosed with dengue and are currently receiving treatment at municipal hospitals.

Municipal Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, who visited the hostel after two students succumbed to the disease last week, confirmed this information.

Dr. Bhosale stated that health checks were conducted for all students in the hostel, and ten more were found to be suffering from dengue. These students are now under treatment at Kamla Nehru Hospital and Baner Hospital.

In response to the situation, the hostel has been instructed to improve cleanliness, provide mosquito nets, install mesh on windows, and take steps to eliminate bedbugs. The commissioner also assured that regular health checks will be conducted to prevent further outbreaks.
