Despite Borewells, Roseland Residency Spends Lakhs on Private Water Tankers

Pune: The residents of Roseland Residency Society in Pimple Saudagar are grappling with an acute water crisis due to an irregular municipal water supply. At the onset of summer, the situation has worsened, forcing the society to rely on private water tankers, leading to significant financial strain.

Roseland Residency, home to approximately 4,500 residents across 950 apartments, requires 5.5 lakh liters of water daily. However, the municipal corporation provides only 2.5 to 3.5 lakh liters every two days—falling drastically short of the society’s needs.

With four out of nine borewells functional and running at reduced capacity due to summer, residents are left with no choice but to procure water from private tankers. On average, the society requires 10-11 tankers daily, amounting to around 1.1 lakh liters of additional water.

The cost of securing water through private tankers has been mounting. In February alone, the society spent ₹2,27,800 on tankers. Within just the first five days of March, ₹67,000 has already been spent, highlighting the severity of the crisis.

Residents question why private suppliers can efficiently provide water while the municipal corporation struggles to do the same. "If private tankers can supply water, why can’t the municipal corporation identify and utilize its own water resources to support societies facing shortages? If the corporation ensures an adequate and reasonably priced water supply, it will not only meet residents’ needs but also generate additional revenue for itself."
