Pune: The Hinjewadi police have registered a case against Dr. Shantanu Sharad Chopra (30), associated with Ruby Hall Hospital, for allegedly abetting the suicide of a young woman.

The incident occurred after the doctor, who had promised to marry the woman, expelled her from his residence late at night and told her to die.

The complaint was filed by the victim’s mother at Hinjewadi Police Station. According to her statement, Dr. Chopra had given her daughter assurances of marriage but frequently caused her emotional distress and verbally abused her.

On September 23, the doctor called the young woman to his residence to live with him. However, they had a dispute later that night, and at around midnight, he forced her to leave the house.

When she pleaded with him, asking where she should go at such a late hour, he reportedly told her to go die somewhere or to end her life.

The young woman then returned to her home in Bavdhan and ended her life by hanging herself from the ceiling fan. The case is now under investigation by Assistant Police Inspector Thakur of the Hinjewadi Police Station.

Earlier in September, a 19-year-old woman had ended her life after her boyfriend of several years refused to marry her. The woman, overwhelmed by the refusal and the pressure from her partner's family, took the drastic step of hanging herself at her residence in Hinjewadi using a scarf.
