A senior officer of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has filed a complaint alleging that he was threatened by one individual who claimed to be involved in smuggling and another who asserted connections to Dawood Ibrahim’s gang, police said on Friday.

The complaint, lodged by an Deputy Director of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Pune Regional Unit based in Pune. He states that on May 3 he received a phone call from an individual who identified himself as Mushtaq Sheikh, expressed a desire to work as a reporter, and requested to speak with him.

A few days later, the caller allegedly contacted the officer again and requested him to help secure the release of laptops and mobile phones purportedly seized by Customs authorities at Mumbai airport while he was returning from Dubai.

However, after the officer refused his request, Sheikh allegedly threatened him and his family on June 6 and sent him voice messages on WhatsApp.

In these messages, Sheikh claimed that one of his associates had been arrested at Mumbai airport because the officer had shared information with customs officials. He also claimed that he is in smuggling operations from three decades and has connections with D-company.

Later that evening, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the officer received another phone call from an unidentified individual who allegedly stated that he had been employed by Dawood Ibrahim’s D-Company syndicate and is well known to the Anti-Terrorism Squad.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Viman Nagar Police registered a non-cognizable offence and began an investigation.
