Pune: A 13-year-old boy, Abhay Nitin Shirke, was injured in an accidental shooting at his home in Dhankawadi’s Vanrai Colony after a loaded revolver kept by his father, a retired army personnel, accidentally discharged.

The incident took place on Tuesday (October 15) afternoon, and a case has since been registered against the father, Nitin Hanumant Shirke (40), by the Sahakarnagar police for negligence.

According to the police, Nitin Shirke, who is currently working as a security officer, owns a licensed firearm, which he had kept loaded in a bag inside a cupboard.

On Tuesday, around 3:15 pm, Abhay, a seventh-grade student, was at home and opened the cupboard where the revolver was stored. The bag containing the loaded firearm accidentally fell to the ground, causing the trigger to be pressed. As a result, a bullet was fired, passing through Abhay's leg.

At the time of the incident, Abhay’s mother and younger brother were also present at home. The loud sound of the gunshot startled them, and they immediately called for help. The Sahakarnagar police quickly arrived at the scene and began an investigation.

Following initial inquiries, it was found that the accident occurred due to negligence on the part of Nitin Shirke, as the revolver had been kept loaded and unsecured.

A formal complaint has been lodged by Police Constable Hemant Raut, and Shirke has been charged with negligence under relevant sections of the law. Assistant Police Inspector Sagar Patil is leading the investigation.
