Pune: In a tragic incident on Nag Panchami, Anil Kaygude, a 40-year-old ex-serviceman, sustained serious injuries after a nylon kite string, known as "Chinese Manja," cut his throat.

The incident occurred around 8 AM while he was on his way to pay homage at the Martyrs' Memorial in Vanjarwadi, Baramati, in honor of August Kranti Day.

The accident took place in front of M.A.E.S.O. School when the razor-sharp kite string became entangled around Kaygude's neck, causing a deep wound and significant blood loss.

He was immediately rushed to a private hospital by concerned citizens, where he underwent emergency surgery. His sudden fall from his motorcycle due to the injury added to the severity of the situation.

Despite existing bans and legal actions against the sale of these dangerous kite strings, their continued availability in the city led to this life-threatening accident.

The incident has sparked public outrage and questions about the effectiveness of the enforcement measures.

Major Anil Kaygude’s life was narrowly saved, with many attributing his survival to sheer luck. Had it not been for timely medical intervention, the outcome on Nag Panchami could have been fatal.

In July 2017, the National Green Tribunal had banned the use of ‘Chinese’ kite strings made of nylon or any synthetic material, which is a non-biodegradable material.

It had directed all the state governments to prohibit the manufacture, sale, storage, purchase and use of synthetic manja or nylon threads and all other synthetic string used to fly kites.
