Pune: Dr. Vidyut Bhagwat, a distinguished feminist writer and activist, passed away at her home on Thursday at the age of 76.
Bhagwat, survived by her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren, was an influential figure in Maharashtra, known for her active participation in movements for women, students, Dalits, and farmers over the past four decades.
As the founding director of the Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Women’s Studies Centre at Pune University, Bhagwat played a pivotal role in establishing women's studies as a recognized academic discipline.
Her extensive writings in both Marathi and English on women's issues, feminist theory, and social history have guided many and highlighted critical societal issues.
Bhagwat edited the groundbreaking project ‘Women’s Writing in India,’ which compiled literature from women writers across various Indian languages.
This project, significant in the development of feminist studies in India, was led by Susie Tharu and K. Lalita at the Anveshi Research Centre for Women’s Studies in Hyderabad.
In addition to her academic contributions, Bhagwat was known for her incisive articles in various newspapers, offering a comprehensive overview of feminist movements and sharp commentary on contemporary societal issues.
Her literary works, including stories, poems, and novels, resonated deeply with readers. She explored the poetry of saint-poetesses from a feminist perspective and addressed movements ranging from women's rights to Dalit and poor farmers' struggles.
Bhagwat authored several influential books such as ‘Stree Prashnanchi Vatachaal’ (The Journey of Women’s Issues), ‘Streevadi Samajik Vichar’ (Feminist Social Thought), and ‘Mi Bai Aahe Mhanun’ (Because I am a Woman). Her first novel, ‘Arparavalokita,’ was published by Hariti Publications.
Actively involved in numerous social movements in Maharashtra, Bhagwat emphasized the importance of regional context in discussions of historical, literary, and gender issues.
Her work earned her numerous accolades, including the Samajvijnan Kosha Puraskar for her book ‘Stree Prashnanchi Vatachaal’ and the Maharashtra Saraswat Gaurav Award.
