Pune: Amidst heavy rainfall and the release of water from the Khadakwasla dam chain, the Pune Fire Brigade successfully rescued two people who were stranded on a small island in the Mutha River near the Dangat Patil Estate in Shivane.

The rescue operation was carried out under challenging conditions, with strong currents and rocky terrain making the task difficult. The fire brigade team, led by Fire Brigade Chief Devendra Potphode, managed to reach the stranded individuals using a small boat and safely brought them to shore. The Water Resources Department, Municipal Disaster Cell, police, and local residents provided crucial support during the operation.

Due to continuous rainfall in the dam area, water levels in the Mutha River rose significantly, prompting the release of water from the Khadakwasla dam. During the rescue, the water discharge was temporarily reduced to facilitate the safe retrieval of the stranded individuals.

The district remains on high alert, with the Pune Meteorological Department issuing a red alert for the next 24 hours. Citizens are advised to remain cautious, ensure adequate drainage, and avoid venturing into risky areas.

In the past few days, Pune has experienced a pattern of heavy evening showers, leading to waterlogging in various parts of the city, including Hadapsar, Magarpatta, Vadgaon Sheri, and Kothrud.

On Saturday, the NDA area recorded the highest rainfall at 30 mm, followed by 16 mm in Shivajinagar. The heavy rains have disrupted daily life, with several roads submerged and water entering homes and shops. The intense rainfall is expected to continue, with areas like Girivan and Lonavala already reporting significant precipitation.
