Pune: The fascination for owning exotic dog breeds imported from foreign countries is increasing significantly, especially in cities like Pune and Mumbai. Pet lovers are willing to spend substantial amounts on acquiring, maintaining, and accessorizing their pets.

Several families are meticulously planning the import of specific dog breeds, ensuring their pets have suitable accommodations, high-quality food, and even exclusive accessories.

A few years ago, Labrador Retrievers were among the most sought-after breeds due to their friendly nature, making them ideal companions for both children and adults. However, the current market trend indicates a sharp rise in demand for Golden Retrievers and Chow Chows.

Luxury and Demand for Exotic Breeds

The Chow Chow, a breed originating from Russia and China, is gaining popularity due to its distinct fluffy appearance and regal demeanor. Experts note that these dogs are frequently seen participating in high-profile dog shows across urban centers. The increasing demand for such foreign breeds reflects changing lifestyle preferences among pet owners, who now view dogs as a status symbol.

Caring for these premium breeds is an expensive affair. Owners often allocate dedicated rooms or spaces within their homes for their pets. Additionally, the availability of specialized pet food brands has further encouraged the trend of keeping foreign breeds.

Post-Pandemic Rise in Dog Ownership

The COVID-19 pandemic saw a surge in dog ownership, as many individuals sought pets to alleviate loneliness and stress. The concept of “dog therapy” gained prominence, with dogs playing a vital role in emotional well-being. Parents also indulge their children’s requests for pets, contributing to the rising demand for various breeds.

Price Trends in the Imported Dog Market

Foreign breeds come with a hefty price tag. The cost of a Siberian Husky starts at ₹60,000, while a Shih Tzu and Pitbull are priced at around ₹30,000 each. Other breeds like Rottweilers and Golden Retrievers range from ₹20,000 onwards, whereas Labrador Retrievers and Pugs are available for ₹10,000. However, these prices fluctuate based on factors such as lineage, breeding center reputation, location, and training levels.

Regulations and Import Process

Importing dogs into India is regulated by the Kennel Club of India (KCI), which sets guidelines on permitted breeds. Punjab currently leads the country in dog imports, with a majority of dogs being sourced from China and Thailand. Once imported, these dogs are often bred within the country to meet the growing demand.

Veterinarians stress the importance of proper care and vaccination for imported breeds. According to Dr. Jayasingh Phude, pet owners must ensure their dogs receive health and rabies-free certificates upon import. Vaccination against common diseases, particularly the "9-in-1" vaccine, is crucial for maintaining the overall health of these pets.
