Pune: The Peth areas of city faced severe traffic congestion on Friday (September 6) as citizens flocked to buy pooja and decoration items in preparation for Ganeshotsav, which begins on Saturday (September 7).

The rush was further complicated by the closure of the riverbank road, after water was released from the dam due to heavy rainfall on Thursday (September 5) night.

The festive spirit brought people out in large numbers to shop for pooja supplies and decorations as they prepared to welcome the beloved deity.

Key shopping areas, including Mandai, Shanipar, and Hutatma Babu Genu Chowk, were bustling with shoppers purchasing pooja items, while Bohri Aali and the electric goods market in Budhwar Peth saw crowds for decorative items.

The Hartalika fast also contributed to the increased foot traffic, with many homemakers among the shoppers.

Despite the rain ceasing by Friday (September 6) morning, the prior downpour necessitated the release of water from the dam, leading authorities to close the riverbank road as a precaution.

This closure heavily impacted traffic, causing gridlock from Tilak Chowk in Narayan Peth to Appa Balwant Chowk. Many shoppers had initially planned to use the riverbank road for easier access to the city center but were forced to take alternative routes, adding to the congestion.

Vehicles lined the streets as shoppers tried to make their purchases, with many choosing to remain on their vehicles while others ventured into the markets. This further worsened the traffic situation, causing significant delays and frustration among commuters.
