Pune: As Gudi Padwa approaches, Pune’s markets are bustling with activity, with citizens flocking to buy sugar garlands, pre-decorated Gudis, and other puja essentials.
On Friday (March 28), major marketplaces, including Ravivar Peth, Mandai, Laxmi Road, and Tulshibaug, saw a surge in shoppers, particularly women, who were keen on purchasing festive essentials.
Shops are displaying an array of sugar garlands in red, yellow, orange, and white, along with decorative dry fruit garlands. These garlands, an integral part of Gudi decorations, are priced between ₹20 and ₹100, while dry fruit garlands range from ₹100 to ₹200. Traders noted an increase in sugar prices by ₹7-8 per kg compared to last year, leading to a price hike of ₹5-10 per garland.
Pre-Decorated Gudis in High Demand
Among festive purchases, pre-decorated Gudis, especially small-sized ones, are seeing the highest demand, as they are often gifted to relatives and friends. Large-sized Gudis are also available for those looking for elaborate decorations. Additionally, shoppers are showing keen interest in ready-made puja kits, Gudi fabrics, and other essential items.
"Compared to last year, the demand is significantly higher. Many customers have placed advance orders, and we are increasing production to meet the growing requirements," said Mahendra Agarwal, a sugar garland manufacturer.
Price Surge in Sugar Garlands
The cost of white sugar garlands has risen notably, with high-quality garlands now priced at ₹1,200 per 10 kg, compared to last year’s rate of ₹900-₹1,000 per 10 kg. The increase is attributed to a rise in sugar prices and labor costs. Among all available colors, saffron-colored sugar garlands remain the most sought after by customers.
Puja Essentials for Gudi Padwa
To celebrate Gudi Padwa, shoppers are also purchasing essential puja items such as neem leaves, flowers, bamboo sticks, turmeric, kumkum, ashtagandha, scented oil, large fabric pieces, mango leaf torans, betel leaves, and fruits.
