Pune: A worrying rise in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases has been reported in Pune, with 163 suspected cases and five deaths confirmed so far. In the past 24 hours, five new cases have been identified.
Health authorities have launched a detailed investigation into the possible causes of the outbreak. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the state and central governments, and the Animal Husbandry Department are conducting extensive research, including water testing and analysis of soil, poultry, and birds.
Breakdown of Cases in Pune Region
Since January 9, GBS cases have been reported across multiple areas, with the following distribution:
32 cases in Pune Municipal Corporation limits
86 cases in newly added municipal areas
18 cases in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits
19 cases in Pune's rural regions
8 cases from neighboring districts
Currently, 111 patients are hospitalized, of whom 47 are in the ICU, and 21 are on ventilator support. Meanwhile, 47 patients have recovered and been discharged, according to Dr. Radhakisan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services.
Investigation and Sample Collection
In an effort to pinpoint the source of the outbreak, authorities have:
Collected and tested water samples in affected areas
Gathered soil and poultry farm samples from the Khadakwasla region
Examined bird droppings and throat swabs to detect potential sources of contamination
Dr. Pawar confirmed that a detailed report on the findings will be released soon, providing clarity on the cause of the outbreak and necessary preventive measures.
