Bengaluru is set to get a world-class sports complex featuring India's second-largest stadium, following an ambitious ₹1,650 crore project announced by Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar. The new facility, planned for Surya City, Bommasandra, will boast a 60,000-seat stadium, a major infrastructure boost for the city's global sporting aspirations. This development is seen as a crucial step in elevating Bengaluru's status as a top sports destination.
Shivakumar revealed the mega-project on Thursday via a post on X, declaring it "Bengaluru's big leap into global sports!" He provided details of the sprawling complex, which will be built on 75 acres of land. The plan includes a range of cutting-edge facilities, from indoor and outdoor arenas to Olympic-size swimming pools, advanced training centers, and a state-of-the-art gym. The complex is designed to be a hub for not just sports but also cultural events, featuring guest houses, hostels, hotels, and a convention hall.
The announcement comes on the heels of a tragic stampede that occurred on June 4, 2025, outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. The incident, which resulted in 11 deaths and 56 injuries, happened during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL title win. The tragedy exposed serious flaws in crowd control and event management, as tens of thousands of fans overwhelmed the 35,000-seat stadium, highlighting the need for larger, safer venues.
The new sports complex is being positioned as a modern solution to these issues, built to meet global standards for safety and capacity. Located in the emerging corridor of Surya City, the project is expected to significantly contribute to the city's overall development. Once operational, it will provide much-needed infrastructure for athletes and organizers, attracting major national and international tournaments.
While Bengaluru already has several sports venues, the new stadium and its supporting facilities will considerably expand its capacity to host large-scale events. Shivakumar described the project as a "major boost" to Bengaluru's sporting culture and urban growth, aiming to nurture local talent and firmly establish the city's role in India's sporting ecosystem.
