Pune, 19 August 2025: Pune witnessed heavy rain on Monday morning, catching citizens off guard and throwing daily life into disarray. What began as light showers soon turned into a downpour by afternoon, with intense spells continuing till around 4 p.m. The sudden burst of rain led to waterlogging and traffic congestion across several parts of the city.
Major roads including Sinhagad Road, Shastri Road, Nagar Road, Shivajinagar, Swargate, Kothrud, Katraj, and Karvenagar reported severe traffic jams. Commuters heading to offices faced long delays, while school and college students also struggled to reach on time.
Several school buses were stuck in traffic, forcing some children to miss classes altogether. In many localities, rainwater collected on streets and potholes, further slowing vehicle movement.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Pune recorded rainfall ranging from 3 mm to 22 mm in different areas by Monday morning. Officials said the weather pattern is likely to continue, with cloudy skies and steady showers expected throughout the week. The IMD has already issued a red alert for the ghat regions, forecasting very heavy to extremely heavy rain in isolated areas over the next two days.
The municipal disaster management department has assured that preparations are in place but cautioned that the situation could worsen if rainfall intensifies over the ghats and dam releases become necessary. Authorities urged citizens to remain vigilant, particularly while traveling through hilly areas.
The weather office further predicted that Pune could see moderate rainfall on August 19 and 20, with temperatures ranging between 25–29°C during the day and 21–23°C at night. From August 21 onward, the rain is expected to ease, with lighter showers likely on August 22 and 23.
Despite the forecast of some relief later in the week, the sudden spell of heavy rain has already underlined the city’s struggle with traffic congestion and waterlogging whenever monsoon showers intensify.
