Pune: A horrifying incident unfolded at Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Chowk, Dighi, where a 17-year-old youth was brutally attacked by a group of young men. Despite a large crowd witnessing the attack, no one stepped forward to help the victim, who screamed for his life. However, Police Officer Devendra Dattatray Ghag, who was passing by, rushed to his aid and prevented a potential fatality.

The incident took place on Sunday, 9 AM, when the victim was on his way to an exam at a coaching center. The attackers, reportedly seven to eight in number, sought revenge over a previous altercation that had resulted in a police complaint against them a month ago. Armed with sickles and hockey sticks, they trapped the youth and began attacking him.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the attackers restrained the victim, holding his arms and legs while one of them repeatedly assaulted him. The crowd watched in silence, reluctant to intervene.

While the attack was in progress, Officer Devendra Ghag, from Nigdi Police Station, was passing through the area on duty. Noticing the large gathering and the assault, he stopped and rushed to intervene. His presence startled the attackers, who abandoned their motorbike and fled. The officer promptly contacted the police control room, and the injured youth was rushed to a private hospital for treatment.

The attackers' motorcycle, which had its number plate concealed with tape, was recovered by the police, providing a crucial lead for the investigation. However, as of Sunday evening, no official case had been registered at Dighi Police Station.

Devendra Dattatray Ghag, Police Officer, Nigdi Police Station: "As soon as I arrived, one attacker, who was carrying weapons in a sack, ran away. I immediately contacted the police control room to ensure medical assistance for the youth. The abandoned motorcycle has been handed over to Dighi Police."
