Pune: In response to the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (hMPV) cases in India, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has heightened its preparedness. A dedicated 50-bed isolation ward has been established at the Naidu Infectious Diseases Hospital.

Despite these efforts, health screening of passengers at Pune's Lohegaon Airport has not yet begun, raising concerns about the potential spread of the virus.

hMPV, which has caused an outbreak in China, has been spreading to several Indian states. The first confirmed case in India was reported in an 8-month-old girl in Bengaluru. Following this, the Maharashtra State Health Department directed PMC to implement preventive measures.

Lohegaon Airport, a hub for domestic air travel, witnesses heavy daily passenger traffic, including flights from Bengaluru, where hMPV cases have been identified. During the COVID-19 pandemic, PMC effectively controlled infections by conducting health screenings at the airport and referring suspected cases to Naidu Hospital. Despite this precedent, no such measures have been implemented yet for HMPV.

Dr. Neena Borade, PMC’s Head of Health Department, said, “Airport screening has not started yet. A decision will be taken in the next meeting. There’s no need to panic; our health system is ready to handle any situation.”

While PMC has not sent any samples for laboratory testing, it is actively gathering information on potential cases. Citizens are advised to monitor symptoms like fever, cough, weakness, or respiratory issues and seek medical advice if needed.

To prevent infection, PMC has issued guidelines for the public, emphasizing hygiene, avoiding public places if symptomatic, and ensuring proper ventilation. Citizens are also advised against handshakes, reusing tissues, and self-medicating.
