Pune: In a devastating accident on the Nagar-Kalyan highway, a speeding truck plowed into a group of people returning from a funeral in Gulanchwadi (Junnar Tehsil), resulting in three fatalities and numerous serious injuries. The incident occurred around 11:30 AM on Friday.

The truck also collided with eight to ten vehicles on the highway, causing extensive damage. The injured were promptly taken to a private hospital in Alephata.

Following the incident, Alephata police arrived at the scene, and local residents initiated a protest on the highway. There are concerns that the death toll and the number of injured may rise.

The accident happened as villagers and relatives were returning from the funeral of Bhamire on the Kalyan-Nagar road. The truck, coming from the Nagar side, struck the funeral procession, leading to the immediate deaths of three individuals.

The villagers, frustrated by the repeated accidents on this stretch of road, have started a protest on the Nagar-Kalyan highway, demanding the construction of a bypass to prevent such tragedies.

They have vowed to continue their protest until the highway authority is charged with manslaughter. The protest has caused significant traffic disruption, with vehicles backed up on both sides of the highway for over two hours.

Assistant Police Inspector Sunil Badgujar and his team arrived at the scene after receiving news of the accident.

The villagers have demanded that highway officials be brought to the scene for discussions, expressing their frustration that despite numerous requests for a bypass, the road continues to pass through their village, resulting in repeated accidents and fatalities.

They hold the highway administration responsible and insist that they will not relent until a case is filed against the highway authority.
