Originally slated for completion in February 2024, the Katraj flyover project has encountered a series of setbacks. The deadline was first extended to December 2024, then to January 2025, and now officials are targeting December 2025 for completion. Securing key parcels of land, especially at Katraj Chowk, has been a prolonged process. Legal disputes and compensation negotiations with landowners stalled progress for years. Multiple failed traffic diversion trials have made it difficult to safely and efficiently redirect vehicles during construction, causing further slowdowns. The project involves coordination between the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and traffic police, adding layers of complexity.
Alongside the flyover, the Katraj-Kondhwa Road is being widened to 84 meters. The Maharashtra government sanctioned ₹140 crore for compensating affected landowners, but delays in disbursement and negotiations have slowed progress. MLA Yogesh Tilekar has pledged to raise the issue in the Legislative Council, aiming for the road expansion to finish within one to two years if land acquisition is completed on schedule.
The ongoing construction and barricading have led to severe congestion at Katraj Chowk, Wondercity, and adjacent routes. The flyover, once completed, is expected to significantly reduce bottlenecks at key intersections, streamline PMPML bus and local traffic, and improve access between Navale Bridge, Katraj, and Kondhwa.
While the Katraj flyover project has faced a series of obstacles-primarily land acquisition and traffic management-recent breakthroughs offer hope for accelerated progress. Authorities are under pressure from citizens and local leaders to deliver on their promises and complete the project by December 2025, finally providing relief from chronic congestion in one of Pune’s busiest corridors.
