Pune: A 30-year-old man, Sandeep alias Shabbir Ibrahim Shaikh, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself after enduring repeated harassment and beatings from his stepfather. The incident took place on October 3, 2024, at Laxminagar, Kondhwa Budruk.
The complaint in this case was filed by Shabbir's maternal aunt, Sangeeta Raju Bagwe, a resident of Lohianagar, Ganj Peth. Based on her statement, the Kondhwa Police have registered a case against Vijay Sumatrao Kasote, the stepfather. The registration of the case came three months after Bagwe persistently followed up with the authorities.
According to the police, Bagwe’s sister had remarried, and initially, her children lived with Bagwe. As they grew older, they moved in with their mother. Shabbir, who worked as a plumber, reportedly faced physical abuse and mental harassment from his stepfather, Vijay Kasote. It is alleged that Kasote would beat Shabbir and lodge false complaints against him with the police, adding to his distress.
Unable to bear the ongoing harassment, Shabbir took his own life. Bagwe, upon learning of his death, rushed to his home, where Shabbir’s body was being transported to Sassoon Hospital for postmortem. During this time, Bagwe discovered a note in Shabbir’s pocket. In the note, he blamed his stepfather’s mental harassment for his decision to end his life.
Relatives of the deceased have claimed that during the police investigation, Shabbir’s clothes were not thoroughly examined, raising questions about procedural lapses. Assistant Police Inspector Vikas Babar is currently investigating the case.
