Pune: In a city known for its grand wedding celebrations, an increasing number of couples are choosing simpler alternatives. Over 5,500 couples have opted for court marriages in Pune in 2024, highlighting a shift towards cost-effective and straightforward legal unions.

While traditional weddings with extravagant decorations, gourmet meals, and elaborate rituals remain popular, many young couples are moving towards legally binding court marriages under the Special Marriage Act, 1954. The process, which is entirely online, offers a practical and less expensive way to tie the knot.

Marriage Registration on the Rise

On average, Pune sees 250–300 court marriages every month, amounting to 5,500 registrations annually. In comparison, only 4,000 such marriages were registered last year. Marriage Officer Sangita Jadhav attributed the rise to increasing awareness about cost-efficient and hassle-free marriage options.

Streamlined and Transparent Process

The government has enhanced transparency by introducing QR codes on marriage certificates. These codes provide digital access to certificates, and the entire registration system is cashless, reducing the need for middlemen.

Jadhav explained that court marriages are open to individuals of all religions and communities. The process begins with an online application, followed by document verification within four days. A mandatory one-month notice period is observed, after which couples can choose a registration date.

Eligibility and Documentation

The bride and groom must meet the minimum age requirements—18 years for the bride and 21 for the groom. All necessary guidelines and forms are available on the government’s official website, ensuring that applications are processed efficiently and correctly.
