Pune: A disturbing incident unfolded in the Lohagad-Visapur Fort area of Maval Taluka on Christmas Day, as a police constable allegedly misbehaved with a five-year-old girl.

The accused, Sachin Vasant Saste (43), has been charged under the POCSO Act, the Atrocities Act, and relevant sections of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). He is currently in custody and has been suspended from duty.

The region saw heavy tourist activity during the festive season, prompting the Pune Rural Police to deploy additional personnel for security. Saste, a resident of Mohammadwadi, Hadapsar, Pune, and originally from Jejuri in Purandar, was assigned to security duties in the Lohagad-Visapur Fort area.

According to the complaint filed by the victim’s relatives, the accused lured the child with chocolates and took her to a secluded spot. Under the influence of alcohol, he allegedly engaged in inappropriate behavior. The incident came to light when the child's family reported the matter to the authorities.

The Lonavala Rural Police Station promptly registered a case late on Wednesday (December 25) night. Sub-Divisional Police Officer Rajendra Mayne is leading the investigation into the matter.

The victim’s relatives expressed their anger and disappointment, stating, “We trusted him as a protector, but he turned out to be the predator. This betrayal has left us questioning where to seek justice.” The family also revealed that they had offered food to the officer out of goodwill as he was on duty in the area.

The relatives have demanded strict action against the accused officer, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice. “The police department must ensure we get justice, and stringent action must be taken against this officer with a perverse mentality,” they stated.
