COVID-19: Maharashtra sees highest single-day spike in deaths

122 fatalities were reported on Wednesday in Maharashtra, taking the death toll of the state to 2,587. This was the highest single day spike in coronavirus deaths in the state. The total number of coronavirus patients in the state is currently 74,860.

One third of the total coronavirus cases in the country are from Maharashtra, which is the home to India’s financial and entertainment capital, Mumbai. 49 out of 122 deaths were reported from Mumbai and 1,276 fresh positive cases were witnessed alone from the financial capital. The death toll now stands at 1,417.

Where as in Pune, there have been a total of 378 fatalities out of which 11 lost their lives on Wednesday.

A total of 32,329 people have recovered from the virus and 996 patients were discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. Maharashtra government has taken a total of 4,97,276 samples, total number of active patients in the state now stands at 39,935.

8,909 people were tested positive all over the country for the virus in last 24 hours, taking the total number of coronavirus cases to over 2 lakhs. A total of 5,815 fatalities have been reported across the country and total number of cases in the country stood at 2,07,615, according to the government data. Today, India is the seventh most affected by the virus among the top 10 nations.

NISARGA CYCLONE

Maharashtra faced another adversity when Cyclone Nisarga hit the coastal state. However, there was not much damage reported in Mumbai. However, Mumbai escaped the brunt of cyclone when the winds shifted and the storm landed on the western shore of India further south than predicted, providing a break in a metropolis already devastated by coronavirus. Many flights and trains got cancelled due to the cyclone, but almost everything has resumed to normal now.
